Fans are praising House of the Dragon actor Matt Smith for easily correcting Sue Perkins on co-star Emma D’Arcy’s pronouns at the season two premiere.
Season two of the Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon comes to Max on June 16, taking fans back to the dangerous world of Westeros with more betrayal, backstabbing, and, of course, big dragons.
The prequel tells the story of the fall of the Targaryen family. It stars Emma D’Arcy, a non-binary icon who loves negroni sbagliatos, as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen. Matt Smith from Doctor Who plays Prince Daemon Targaryen. Ewan Mitchell from Saltburn plays Prince Aemond Targaryen. Olivia Cooke plays Queen Alicent Hightower, and Abigail Thorn, a trans actress and YouTube star, joins in season two.

While the characters in House of the Dragon often fight with each other about duty, honor, and dragons, it’s clear the real-life cast gets along well outside of Westeros.
Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith is getting lots of praise from fans for easily using Emma D’Arcy’s correct pronouns during an interview at the season two premiere.

At the premiere in London’s Leicester Square on June 10, Sue Perkins, the former host of The Great British Bake Off, interviewed Smith. They talked about the final scene of episode one, and Perkins accidentally used the wrong pronouns for D’Arcy.
“I was talking to Emma, and she was saying—,” Perkins started. “She was talking about how amazing that end scene was… and she gave you all the credit.”
Smith smoothly replied, “I can’t take the credit, but I have to say, aren’t they brilliant?” He added, “They are absolutely brilliant, and you’re in for a real treat with Emma this year. I think Emma has given a really great performance.”
People praised Smith for using his scene partner’s correct pronouns so smoothly. The original poster of the video, who recorded it from a TikTok Live stream by Sky, especially noticed this.
Another fan said, “The way [Smith] looked right at the interviewer and said ‘They…’ multiple times is perfect,” and a third fan commented, “The way he really emphasized ‘they’—Matt and the rest of the cast have been so nice and respectful towards Emma. It’s great to see.”
Someone else wrote, “The way he emphasized ‘they’ shows he really cares about Emma,” while another joked, “‘Aren’t THEY brilliant’—ok, Matt Smith, you nailed it.”

D’Arcy talked about why “clothes are armor” for non-binary people in an interview with Highsnobriety Magazine.
“Clothing is important for most people because it shows who they are. But for gender-fluid or trans people, clothes are even more important,” they said.
“I’m a trans-masc presenting person, and I usually like to wear stiff shapes in a relaxed way. I used to like textures more, but now I’m getting into bright colors.
“Clothes are armor for me,” they added. “They’re essential to who I am, and I feel different in different outfits.”
House of the Dragon Season 2 will be on Max starting June 16.
