Tom Holland is set to return as Spider-Man in the Marvel-Sony team-up.
Destin Daniel Cretton is ready to take on Spider-Man’s world. The director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in talks to lead Spider-Man 4. This ends the guessing about who would direct the next movie in one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises.
Cretton will bring new energy to this Spider-Man movie, starring Tom Holland. It’s a co-production between Sony and Disney’s Marvel Studios. He’ll be the fourth director to handle a Spider-Man solo film. Jon Watts directed the last three movies with Holland, Marc Webb directed the two Amazing Spider-Man films with Andrew Garfield, and Sam Raimi made the trilogy starring Tobey Maguire.
The Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland became a $1 billion franchise, with Spider-Man: No Way Home drawing people back to theaters during the pandemic. Released in December 2021, the movie earned nearly $2 billion and also featured Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are returning to write the script, with Marvel’s Kevin Feige and former Sony head Amy Pascal producing.
Sources say that Spider-Man 4 is moving quickly and is set to start filming early next year.
The plot for Spider-Man 4 is still a mystery. No Way Home ended with the world forgetting that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, including his close friends like MJ (Zendaya), who no longer knows him. In June 2023, Tom Holland told The Hollywood Reporter that he and the producers had several meetings about making a fourth movie.
Cretton is well-liked in the Marvel world. His work on Shang-Chi is seen as a standout in the movies after Avengers: Endgame. He was set to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but he left the project last November due to changes in its schedule and developments related to Jonathan Majors’ assault trial. Marvel has been eager to find another project for him.

Landing the Spider-Man 4 job shows Marvel’s confidence in Cretton, especially after his work on Wonder Man, a Disney+ series starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, which is now in post-production.
Cretton is still set to direct a live-action Naruto movie and a sequel to Shang-Chi, but it’s unclear how his work on Spider-Man will impact those projects.
