Many Marvel fans are upset about Robert Downey Jr being cast as Doctor Doom. This weekend at ComicCon, they announced that the Iron Man star, whose character died in Avengers: Endgame, will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in a new role. Downey Jr will play the Fantastic Four villain in the new movie Avengers: Doomsday.
The Russo brothers directing the movie didn’t share specific details about Robert Downey Jr’s role. They explained that his casting was possible because the multiverse has many different worlds with old and new characters, allowing endless possibilities.
Downey Jr might play an evil version of Tony Stark/Iron Man. This idea likely came up after Jonathan Majors was removed from the MCU. In an upcoming Avengers movie, he was supposed to be the main bad guy, Kang the Destroyer.
The announcement at Comic-Con in San Diego got a big cheer at first, but online reactions have been mixed. Some people think it’s a “desperate move” to save a struggling series. Others are upset that Downey Jr is returning to the MCU after winning an Oscar for Oppenheimer.

People are also upset because Doctor Doom is Romani, which is important to his story. Casting Downey Jr takes away this part of the character. People also think that because the Avengers will be fighting someone who looks like their old leader, Doctor Doom won’t wear his mask as much as he does in the comics.
“It might work, but right now, it feels like a desperate move to get people excited again,” one fan said.
Another added, “This is kind of lame, not gonna lie. I love Robert Downey Jr., but he’s Iron Man. This feels desperate.”
One fan said, “Robert Downey Jr playing Doctor Doom is so Marvel… it shows they aren’t even trying to be original.” Another fan added, “I might be in the minority, and it’s not an insult to RDJ, who I love, but this feels lazy. It could work, but I’m not excited at all.”
Some Marvel fans are thrilled about the actor returning to the MCU, calling it “historic” and looking forward to seeing how his role will affect characters like Spider-Man.
However, some comic book readers are unhappy because they think this will take away from Doctor Doom’s rivalry with Fantastic Four characters Reed Richards and Sue Storm. Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby will play these characters in the MCU.

The actor first played Iron Man in 2008 and appeared in 10 more Marvel movies over the next 11 years. Downey Jr. had said he would “happily” return to Marvel, saying, “It’s too much a part of who I am.”
“When we made Avengers: Endgame, we thought it was the end for us in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But since then, we’ve found a special story that might show us a new path forward with you.”
