Sony Pictures doesn’t have the best history with Marvel movies, so fans didn’t expect much from Madame Web. When the movie released, it got a low 12% score on Rotten Tomatoes and made just $100.3 million at the worldwide box office, which didn’t surprise many people.
Even with a talented cast and a director like SJ Clarkson, known for superhero shows like Jessica Jones and The Defenders, Madame Web didn’t deliver. Many now consider it one of the worst superhero movies ever made. Some fans might still enjoy the movie—at least, we think so—but we’ve got some bad news for them today.
The Wrap reveals that out of 323 movies eligible for Oscar nominations, 116 aren’t allowed to compete for “Best Picture.” Surprisingly, Madame Web is one of those movies.
The reason isn’t entirely clear. To qualify for the Oscars, a movie must “play in a theater in one of these six U.S. cities: Los Angeles, New York, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami, or Atlanta.” It also has to “run for at least seven consecutive days at the same theater between January 1 and December 31, 2024.” Additionally, the movie must “have a running time of more than 40 minutes.”

We think Madame Web meets the basic requirements, but it might not have passed the Representation and Inclusion Standards (RAISE). As explained, these rules say “Best Picture nominees must meet extra standards for diversity and inclusion.” Other movies left out include Bird, Woman of the Year, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, and Mean Girls.
We can only hope—well, maybe not—that Kraven the Hunter does better since it is eligible. Other eligible movies include Deadpool & Wolverine, Joker: Folie à Deux, and Venom: The Last Dance. However, it’s unlikely any of them will make it to the “Best Picture” category.

The 97th Oscars will take place on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood and will air live on ABC. In a different Marvel story, Madame Web takes a unique turn by exploring the origin of one of Marvel’s most mysterious characters.
The suspenseful movie follows Cassandra Webb, played by Dakota Johnson, a Manhattan paramedic who discovers she might have the power to see the future. As secrets from her past come to light, she teams up with three young women who have incredible destinies—if they can survive the dangers they face now.
The cast includes Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott.
You can watch Madame Web on Netflix or get it on Digital, 4K UHD, Blu-ray, or DVD.
