Austin Butler is going to star in Luca Guadagnino’s new version of the book American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis for Lionsgate.
There were earlier rumors that Jacob Elordi was being considered to play Patrick Bateman, but that didn’t work out. Interestingly, Elordi and Butler have played very different versions of Elvis in movies by Sofia Coppola (Priscilla) and Baz Luhrmann (Elvis).
The movie, which has a script written by Scott Z. Burns (The Laundromat), is not a remake of the 2000 film but a new adaptation of Ellis’s novel.

In the original movie, which came out in 2000 and is set in the 1980s, Christian Bale plays Patrick Bateman, a Wall Street businessman who is also a serial killer. Luca Guadagnino, known for “Call Me by Your Name,” “Challengers,” and most recently “Queer,” might focus more on romance and attraction in this new version compared to the original horror-comedy. Guadagnino has worked in genres like horror before, with “Suspiria” and “Bones and All.”
While Butler will play the main character, Guadagnino might imagine Patrick Bateman in a very different way than the earlier movie.

Guadagnino just finished filming “After the Hunt,” which stars Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield. His last two movies, “Queer” and “Challengers,” were nominated for Golden Globes. Daniel Craig (“Queer”) was nominated for best actor, and Zendaya is competing for best actress in “Challengers,” which is also nominated for motion picture (musical or comedy) and music.
