“I invited a few of my favorite actors to join the show,” says creator Mike McMahan.
When the crew of Star Trek: Lower Decks say “go big or go home,” they often end up causing a massive accident that spreads chaos across the galaxy and frustrates their bosses. To be clear, that chaos will continue in the fifth and final season of this animated comedy, but some classic Star Trek characters will also be joining the adventure.
Some key people behind Lower Decks — creator Mike McMahon and stars Tawny Newsome (Mariner), Noël Wells (Tendi), and Eugene Cordero (Rutherford) — hint at a few exciting guest appearances, including one that’s already been announced.
When I found out this would be our last season, I made sure to invite some of my favorite actors to join the show, You’ll just have to wait and see!
McMahon shared in an interview with Entertainment Weekly and PEOPLE.
Each episode of Season 5 draws inspiration from classic Star Trek, and some well-known Trek characters make appearances. They’ve already revealed that Harry Kim, played by Garrett Wang, has a hilarious episode where he faces different versions of himself.

Garrett Wang first played Harry Kim, the “forever ensign,” on the U.S.S. Voyager in Star Trek: Voyager back in 1995. (The Voyager ship showed up last season, too!) Now, Wang returns to voice Harry Kim in animated form on Lower Decks Season 5, where his character has been promoted to lieutenant—and there are now several versions of him!
What I can share is that Garrett Wang brings so much energy and personality as Harry Kim that having just one wasn’t enough, We had to find a way to bring in multiple Garretts, multiple Harrys, because fans have been waiting so long to see him again.
Newsome explains
“It’s totally worth the wait,” Cordero adds, calling Wang’s return “an incredible cameo” that “feels like much more than just a cameo.”

Previous Lower Decks seasons brought in stars like Jonathan Frakes as William Riker, Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi, John de Lancie as Q, Nana Visitor as Kira Nerys, and Armin Shimerman as Quark. As for Season 5, Newsome hints, “There could be more cameos. Who knows?” In other words, there definitely will be more! The actress also confirms there will be “definitely more explosions” this season.
It’s not Lower Decks if something isn’t blowing up, You could put that on a billboard! Yes, Season 5 should be called Lower Decks Season 5: Explosions.
