Cierra Ortega, who was disqualified late in the season after past use of a racial slur surfaced, did not appear at the reunion. Although Ortega was shown in recap clips and mentioned in interviews, neither the hosts nor producers addressed the reason for her exit. Her former partner, Nic Vansteenberghe, was asked about her leaving but sidestepped the circumstances.
After her removal, Ortega apologized, agreed with the show’s decision, and shared that she wanted to improve. Still, the lack of an on-air discussion left questions about accountability and the racist harassment Ortega endured from viewers once she left the villa.
Some fans reportedly went after her family, with one even contacting immigration authorities. Critics say the reunion missed an important opportunity to let Ortega take responsibility publicly and to call out the dangers of retaliatory racism within the fandom.
Other contestants also dealt with similar situations. Yulissa Escobar was removed in the first week for using racial slurs, though her brief time on the show meant she had little impact on the season. At the reunion, Chelley Bissainthe and Olandria Carthen spoke about the racist harassment they experienced from fans of fellow islander Huda Mustafa. Huda did not condemn the abuse when it happened and only gave a late and limited apology during the special.
Commentators note that while Love Island has made progress with on-screen diversity, the reunion highlighted the show’s unwillingness to address racism and accountability directly. Without a meaningful conversation, critics argue, both the cast and viewers are left without clear guidance on how to handle these issues responsibly.
