Wes Ball is creating a new live-action movie called The Legend of Zelda. There isn’t an exact release date yet, but fans believe it will be in theaters by the decade’s end. The movie is moving forward well because it has a talented creative team and strong support from Nintendo, the famous video game company.
Although fans hoped the movie would come out sooner, they can now be sure that The Legend of Zelda will be shown in theaters by the end of 2030.
Nintendo’s latest financial report, covering up to March 2025, included a special graphic showing their upcoming movie projects. Along with a teaser poster for the next Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel, they also revealed that The Legend of Zelda movie is planned for release sometime in the 2020s.

It’s unlikely to come out next year or even in 2026, but filming could start in the next few years. Fans may have to wait a while, but getting a realistic timeline directly from Nintendo is exciting. The company shared these updates in their report.
Wes Ball, known for directing the Maze Runner trilogy and the well-received Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is now bringing his creative skills to one of the most famous video game stories ever, The Legend of Zelda. While many fans hoped for an animated movie about Link’s journey to save Princess Zelda and Hyrule, Ball’s directing talent makes him a great choice for a live-action version. Although there aren’t many details yet, The Legend of Zelda movie has captured our attention—and will keep us excited until 2030!
Before Zelda, Plenty of Video Game Adaptations Are on the Way
The Legend of Zelda is one of the most eagerly awaited live-action adaptations coming soon. But it’s important to remember the big hits that led the way. Sonic the Hedgehog became a surprise global success, now gearing up for a third movie featuring Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog, a popular character.
Not all video game movies do well, though; Borderlands, released by Lionsgate, didn’t perform at the box office. Even so, movies like Uncharted, despite mixed reviews, still drew large theater audiences. The Legend of Zelda aims to build on this momentum and shine on both big and small screens.
Video game adaptations are now becoming major TV events. HBO’s The Last of Us series, which won an Emmy and has a highly anticipated second season coming next year, and Netflix’s animated hit Arcane, based on League of Legends, have been fan favorites recently.
Castlevania and Tomb Raider also got well-made animated versions on TV. While live-action adaptations are very popular, it’s clear that video game shows are here to stay, expanding quickly across different formats.
