On Thursday, June 20, right after Donald’s agent said that he had passed away at age 88, Kiefer, who is also an actor and 57 years old, wrote a heartfelt message on X (formerly known as Twitter) about his dad’s career.
“With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away.” He shared a black-and-white photo of himself as a kid with his dad. He added, “I believe he was one of the most important actors in film history. He never backed down from any role, whether it was good, bad, or ugly.”

Kiefer ended the post by saying, “He loved what he did and did what he loved, and you can’t ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
The Academy Award winner, Donald Sutherland, who recently acted in TV shows like The Undoing, Trust, and Swimming with Sharks, leaves behind five children, including Kiefer, and five grandchildren. He shared Kiefer with his ex-wife, actress Shirley Douglas.
Donald Sutherland was married to Lois Hardwick before marrying actress Francine Racette in 1972. With Francine, he had three kids: Roeg, Rossif, and Angus. He also had a daughter named Rachel with Shirley Douglas, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 86.
In 2022, Kiefer talked openly in an interview with The Guardian about how his dad inspired him to become an actor. He said, “It’s hard to find another actor who has done so many different movies like Ordinary People, Don’t Look Now, Fellini’s Casanova, Bertolucci’s 1900, and The Hunger Games. My dad influenced me to have a varied and interesting career by showing me through his actions, not just words, which was really cool.”
Donald Sutherland played many famous roles, like Mr. Bennet in the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley and Hawkeye Pierce in the 1970 movie MAS*H. He also starred in movies like Ordinary People (1980) and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), and played the evil President Snow in all four Hunger Games movies with Jennifer Lawrence.
Missy Davy from CAA confirmed to PEOPLE that Donald died on Thursday in Miami. She said, “The family will celebrate his life privately.”
