Following the news that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy plans to retire by the end of 2025, discussions have naturally shifted to potential successors.
“One reason Kathy stuck around for so long is because there is no credible alternative,” a source told The Hollywood Reporter. Kennedy, who was personally chosen by George Lucas, has led Lucasfilm since 2012, overseeing the sequel trilogy and expanding the franchise into Disney+ TV series.
However, as a producer with ties to Star Wars pointed out, “what people don’t understand is that it’s not a creative job. That’s about 10 percent. The rest of it is dealing with Disney, licensing, and fans.”
Several names are reportedly being considered, including Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Kevin Feige. Favreau, the creative force behind The Mandalorian and director of the first two Iron Man films, is among them. However, a source predicted, “he won’t want to be an executive.”
One source claims that Dave Filoni, currently Lucasfilm’s chief creative officer, is Disney’s top pick for the role. However, another insider told The Hollywood Reporter, “he’s a great resource of knowledge, but he’s ultimately a TV guy. He’ll be killed by all sides.”
Many insiders believe Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige would be the best fit, but his commitment to the MCU makes that unlikely. “He’s the only one that makes sense, but he needs to focus on Marvel,” a Disney source said.
The next Star Wars film, The Mandalorian & Grogu, hits theaters on May 22, 2026, featuring Jeremy Allen White and Sigourney Weaver. In the meantime, check out our guide to upcoming Star Wars movies and shows.
