Connor Storrie, the actor who played the character in Arkham Asylum who kills Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) at the end of Joker: Folie à Deux, shared his thoughts on the film’s ending, which some people found controversial.
Many viewers didn’t like how the movie hinted that Arthur might not be the “real” Joker from the Batman comics, known as Batman’s biggest enemy. Instead, the film suggests that Connor’s character could be the one who eventually becomes the real Joker.
In an interview with TMZ, Connor Storrie explained that the movie’s ending wasn’t meant to lead into another film where his character becomes the famous Joker from the Batman comics. After his character stabs Arthur, he cuts a smile into his face, leaving scars like the Joker from The Dark Knight, played by Heath Ledger.
Connor Storrie said his character was there to help finish Arthur Fleck’s story in the Joker world. Even though we learn who Storrie’s character is, he explains that the ending doesn’t change the fact that both movies were all about Arthur’s journey. You can read what Storrie said about the movie’s ending below:
We follow Arthur the entire time, so it is his story, no matter how it ends. It is the story of Arthur Fleck from beginning to end. I was just excited to be there, and I wasn’t even really considering what that could mean or where that could go. I know that the Joker has a huge following, and I would even say it is a cult following: Joker fans are very into it. But I was honestly just kind of like,
Storrie shared how hard it was to keep the movie’s ending a secret, especially since that was the only part of the movie he knew about. He also mentioned that most people working on set probably didn’t know how Arthur’s story would end. This meant he had to keep his character’s role in the movie a secret for two years after being chosen for the part.
In the ending this is shown in the last scene, where the camera focuses on Arthur as he’s dying, with Storrie’s character just in the background. The director, Todd Phillips, also said he doesn’t plan to make more Joker movies.
Another Batman movie that finished its story but hinted at a new character was The Dark Knight Rises from 2012. At the movie’s end, Robin John Blake, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, is shown stepping into the role of Batman.
Even though this ending made it seem like the story could continue, both Gordon-Levitt and the director, Christopher Nolan, have said that the ending was meant to be the series final chapter.
Even though the movie could have led to more about The Dark Knight, what Storrie and Phillips said, along with Joker: Folie à Deux not doing well at the box office, makes it seem like a third movie won’t happen.
Storrie’s comments about the ending of Joker: Folie à Deux show that a sequel is unlikely. At the other hand, Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as Arthur was highly praised, even winning him an Academy Award, so a sequel without him wouldn’t get people as excited.
The movie has also gotten adverse reactions from fans and critics, and it’s not doing great at the box office, showing that this version of Gotham City might be finished.
