Johnny Depp’s Hollywood comeback continues with Carnival, a bold new project from visionary director Terry Gilliam. After years of speculation, Italian producer Guglielmo Marchetti has confirmed that the film is officially set to begin production in early 2025.
Originally titled The Carnival at the End of Days, the film has been shortened to Carnival a fittingly cryptic title for a Gilliam project. Marchetti, in a recent interview with Box Office Biz, revealed that the film will feature an all-star cast, including Jeff Bridges, Jason Momoa, Adam Driver, Asa Butterfield, and Emma Laird. The production will involve a massive Italian crew, utilizing Cinecittà sound stages, with over 3,000 people expected to work on the project.

Depp’s Hollywood Resurgence Continues
Since his high-profile legal battles, Depp has gradually made his way back into the industry with projects like Jeanne du Barry and his directorial effort, Modi: Three Days on the Wings of Madness. While he’s also attached to the upcoming vampire thriller Day Drinker, Carnival could be his most high-profile role yet. He takes on the character of Satan, opposite Jeff Bridges as God, in what promises to be a provocative take on religious mythology.
Gilliam has already warned audiences that the film will push boundaries.
He won’t be the God we’re used to. In the film, God is nature. But a nature that can speak to you… It will be very funny for those who like to be offended.
the director teased.
A Plot Designed to Stir Controversy
The film’s synopsis sets the stage for a unique twist on biblical lore: “God, disappointed with what’s gone down on planet Earth, wants to wipe out Humanity, and the only one who wants to save them is Satan, who convinces God that two young people he’s found are the new Adam and Eve.”
With its controversial themes, Carnival is sure to spark debate, especially with Depp in a leading role. As production gears up, expect plenty of buzz—and plenty of reactions—as more details emerge.
