Christopher Nolan is one of the most acclaimed directors of the 21st century. Although he technically debuted with Following in 1998, his breakthrough came with Memento in 2000. The film earned Nolan his first Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, which he co-wrote with his brother, Jonathan Nolan. Memento is a prime example of Nolan’s signature use of time as a storytelling device, a technique that would define much of his work.
While Memento was well-received, Nolan’s reputation has only grown over the years. His first film to earn a Best Picture nomination was Inception, followed by multiple Oscar-nominated works like Dunkirk and Oppenheimer. The latter became his first movie to win Best Picture and also secured him an Oscar for Best Director. As Nolan now focuses on The Odyssey, acting legend John Lithgow has shared which film he believes is the director’s true masterpiece.
Actor John Lithgow considers Interstellar to be Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece. The 2014 sci-fi epic stars Matthew McConaughey as Cooper, a former NASA pilot leading a mission to find a new habitable planet as Earth becomes unlivable. Lithgow had a supporting role as Cooper’s father-in-law, Donald. The film also featured Anne Hathaway, Mackenzie Foy, Jessica Chastain, Ellen Burstyn, David Oyelowo, and a young Timothée Chalamet.

In an interview with Variety, Lithgow praised Interstellar, recalling a scene he filmed with Chalamet and reflecting on the actor’s rise to stardom. He described the film as Nolan’s “masterpiece” while acknowledging that the director has created “a few masterpieces.” Check out his full quote below:
We go see the New York Yankees play in what looks like a community recreation center ballfield. Because you know, there’s only 10% of the world’s population left. And yet we’re trying to keep alive the way things used to be. You know of course, I was the old man. I was the grandad of Timothée Chalamet, I might add. I consider it Chris Nolan’s masterpiece, but he’s come up with a few masterpieces. But a great time. And I got to work with Timothée and watch him turn into a superstar. A much much much bigger deal than I am.
Although Interstellar received a generally positive response upon its release, it isn’t among Nolan’s highest-rated films. In fact, compared to his other works, the sci-fi epic ranks lower on Rotten Tomatoes. However, its 10th-anniversary re-release last year performed well at the box office, reflecting its enduring appeal. Along with Lithgow’s praise, this highlights Interstellar’s lasting impact on pop culture, even if it remains overshadowed by some of Nolan’s other films.
