When John Carpenter’s They Live came out in 1988, it quickly became popular among sci-fi fans. The movie tells a spooky and clever story about aliens secretly controlling people through hidden messages that can only be seen with unique sunglasses. Carpenter made the film to warn about the dangers of uncontrolled capitalism, a message that still feels important today, 37 years later.
Because They Live is so popular, there have been many special edition releases. Now, fans can get a cool new version that looks like it came from the 1990s: a widescreen VHS tape from the UK’s Vice Press Home Video.
Lately, more people have been getting into collecting VHS tapes. This is partly because of Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary’s Video Archives podcast and partly because movie fans want physical copies instead of just streaming, which can feel temporary. Nostalgia is a big reason, too—people who grew up with VHS tapes love how they look and feel.

They Live is the newest special edition VHS from Vice Press Home Video, which makes tapes for collectors who love old-school movies. They started with Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead II and Dario Argento’s Suspiria, and last year, they made a VHS version of Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus that looked just like the classic tapes from the past.

They Live will come in two versions. The first is the They Live, We Sleep edition, which has artwork by Florey and comes with one of five white VHS tapes with famous slogans from the movie printed on them. The second is the Collector’s Edition, which has a cover that can be flipped.
One side has art by Vice Press Home Video co-founder Matt Ferguson, and the other side has the original movie poster with Roddy Piper.
No matter which one you choose, fans of John Carpenter might find it hard to resist the urge to, as the aliens in They Live would say, CONSUME.
