Goldblum says of the parallels “Everything you do leaves its residue.”
The Wizard of Oz has always been a trickster.
But in Wicked, he’s not just a fake magician; he’s also a bad guy who takes power and tries to control everything. He uses other people’s magic to create a world where he decides everything. Jeff Goldblum, who plays the Wizard, finds this role natural because of the characters he’s played before.
In Thor: Ragnarok, Goldblum was the Grandmaster, a ruler who wanted power but wasn’t very smart. This makes his role in Wicked feel like a perfect fit.
In Thor: Ragnarok, the Grandmaster rules his planet, Sakaar, by tricking people. He spends his time having fun, throwing parties, and forcing his slaves to fight in gladiator battles.
The Wizard in Wicked might seem nicer at first, but Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) finds out he is the one hurting the Animals in Oz and making them suffer. He works with Madam Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) to make Elphaba look like a villain and call her the Wicked Witch.

Jeff Goldblum, who plays the Wizard, hopes people watching the movie will think about what real power means, just like in Thor: Ragnarok.
Wicked first opened on Broadway in 2003 with Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth as the stars. The musical is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 book and has songs by Stephen Schwartz.
It tells the story of how the two witches, Elphaba and Glinda, went from students at Shiz University to Elphaba becoming the Wicked Witch of the West. The show was a big hit and got 10 Tony Award nominations in 2004, including Best Musical.
The movie version, directed by Jon M. Chu, stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. It also features Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, and Marissa Bode. The movie is being released in two parts, and the first part is now in theaters.
