Season 2 of Shrinking has ended, but fans are already excited for Season 3, especially since there are still some unfinished storylines. One story fans want to see more of is Jimmy, played by Jason Segel, pursuing Sofi, a divorced mom who appeared in Episode 10.
Sofi was played by Cobie Smulders, Segel’s co-star from How I Met Your Mother. In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Segel shared how much he enjoyed acting with Smulders again and how their past connection added depth to their scene.
Jason Segel shared his thoughts on working with Cobie Smulders again, saying,
On How I Met Your Mother, we rarely had scenes together, so it felt really cool. I feel like there’s a weight to it that goes beyond two people meeting for the first time. That’s what makes it feel so interesting and electric. There was something really meaningful about it.
Reflecting on their scene in Shrinking, he added,
The role of Sofi wasn’t originally written for Cobie Smulders, and it’s unclear if her character will return in Season 3. However, given the strong chemistry between her and Segel, it’s likely she might come back. Segel believes their great connection comes from their shared history working together on How I Met Your Mother.

Segel explained to THR,
When we worked on How I Met Your Mother, Cobie and I were the youngest on set, so we grew up together from our early 20s to early 30s. Those are important years when you’re figuring out who you are and learning from mistakes. Standing across from each other 10 years later, we both realized, ‘We’re still here, and we’ve grown up.’ You can feel that connection in scenes like this, where the characters recognize each other, and it fits perfectly with the story.
Segel also felt a strong connection with Brett Goldstein on Shrinking, even though they didn’t share much screen time. Goldstein, who plays Louis — the man responsible for the car accident that killed Jimmy’s wife — also co-created the show with Segel and Bill Lawrence. Segel felt comfortable with Goldstein, especially in the season’s final scene, where both characters reach out for support after avoiding each other for so long.
I’m not usually all about the deep stuff as an actor, but that night was quiet, and so was the scene. They set up the cameras in a way that made it feel like Brett and I were just sitting on a bench, talking. Even for our close-ups, the cameras were placed far away, using a long lens. It felt tender, intimate, and exactly how it was meant to be.
Segel explained,
Bill Lawrence, co-creator of Shrinking and a big fan of How I Met Your Mother, hopes Cobie Smulders will return as Sofi in the next season. In an interview with TVLine, he said,
I’d love to have Cobie back. We always drop hints about the next season in the one before, and her character represents what moving forward looks like for Jason’s character. If she can’t come back, we’ll have to rethink things.
Lawrence praised the chemistry between Smulders and Jason Segel, calling it “authentic and romantic.” He added,
They were both amazing in their scenes together, and I’ll do whatever it takes to convince her to return.
Season 3 of Shrinking is officially happening, with filming starting this January. The new season will focus on Jimmy’s journey to move forward and dive deeper into Paul’s fight with Parkinson’s disease. Played by Harrison Ford, Paul’s condition has worsened as the story unfolds.
The show stars Jason Segel, Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Christa Miller, and Ted McGinley. You can stream Shrinking on Apple TV+.
