James Cameron spoke with Empire magazine to celebrate the 40th anniversary of “The Terminator.” During the interview, he responded well to people who criticize the awkward dialogue in some of his films.
“I don’t see ‘The Terminator’ as something perfect, When I watch it now, some parts make me cringe, but other parts make me think, ‘We did a good job with what we had at the time.'”
the filmmaker said
“I don’t feel embarrassed by the dialogue, but it seems like many people do, You know what? Show me your three out of the four highest-grossing films, and then we can talk about how good the dialogue is.”

Cameron was talking about his big box office hits: “Avatar,” which is the highest-grossing movie ever at $2.9 billion, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” which is third at $2.3 billion, and “Titanic,” which is fourth at $2.2 billion. He points out that even if some people find his scripts cringey, it hasn’t stopped his movies from making a lot of money.
The Oscar winner often stands up for his films. In 2022, when he talked to Empire magazine, he strongly criticized people who complained about the three-hour length of “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
“I don’t want to hear anyone complaining about the length when they can binge-watch TV for eight hours, I can already guess what some reviews will say: ‘The painfully long three-hour movie…’ It’s ridiculous! I’ve seen my kids watch five one-hour episodes back-to-back. Here’s the thing: it’s totally fine to get up and take a break if you need to!”
Cameron told the magazine
Cameron also had strong opinions about people who keep making fun of the first “Avatar” movie. Even though it made a lot of money, received nine Oscar nominations, and won three awards, some still say it isn’t culturally important. This is surprising since its long-awaited sequel became the third highest-grossing movie of all time.

“The critics act like nobody cares about the movie and can’t remember the characters’ names or what happened, Then they watch it again and think, ‘Oh, wait, maybe I should keep quiet.’ So I’m not concerned about that.”

Cameron’s third “Avatar” movie, titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” will hit theaters on December 19, 2025, from Disney.
