2025 has truly been the year of Superman. This summer marked the long-awaited return of the Man of Steel to theaters in James Gunn’s blockbuster hit, which kicked off the new DCU with a bold, punk-inspired take on the Kryptonian hero that impressed both critics and audiences. But David Corenswet wasn’t the only superhero making waves this year. Invincible also returned for its highly praised third season on Prime Video back in February, putting Mark Grayson through some of his toughest physical and emotional trials yet, culminating in a fierce showdown with the powerful, Jeffrey Dean Morgan-voiced Viltrumite known as Conquest. The show’s return reignited a long-running debate among fans: who would win in a fight between Superman, Mark’s all-powerful father Omni-Man, and The Boys’ villainous Superman-like character, Homelander.
During an interview with Collider’s Maggie Lovitt at New York Comic-Con, Invincible creator Robert Kirkman finally shared his own thoughts on the matter, and crowned Omni-Man the winner. Of course, Kirkman may be a little biased, as Nolan Grayson is his own creation, both on-screen and in the original comics illustrated by Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley. Still, he offered a clear argument for why J.K. Simmons’s iconic mustached Viltrumite would dominate. Kirkman said that Homelander doesn’t stand much of a chance due to the more grounded world of The Boys, but he reserved his harshest criticism for Superman. And while fans have already witnessed Omni-Man’s terrifying power, such as his destruction of the Flaxan homeworld, Season 4 could showcase just how closely his strength compares to Superman’s.
Well, Homelander is a weakling. And that’s not any kind of antagonistic thing. It’s a very grounded world, and so Homelander, on the scale of other superheroes, is very low. But Superman sucks. Omni-Man takes him down easily. I’ve said this before. Every time I say it, a bunch of Superman fans, if you can believe there is such a thing, come out of the woodwork and attack me online as if I said something that’s not definitively and indisputably true. But Omni-Man would completely trash that guy. Superman, ‘Oh my gosh, in the golden age, he moved planets.’ Okay, whatever. Who knows if Omni-Man could do that? Maybe he could. Maybe pay attention to Season 4. Who knows? But, yeah, I think that Superman is absolute trash.
Despite his harsh words for the Man of Steel, Kirkman still praised Superman’s latest movie. “But James Gunn’s movie was excellent,” he added. When Lovitt mentioned the film’s punk tone, Kirkman jokingly accused the interviewer of being anti-Superman, even though Collider’s Ross Bonaime gave the film an 8/10 in his review.
I know what you were trying to say. It’s okay. Collider does not endorse the James Gunn Superman. You heard it here first.

Season 4 of Invincible is set to once again raise the stakes for Mark and the other heroes on Earth. After believing he killed Conquest, Mark (Steven Yeun) made a grim vow to eliminate anyone who dares to threaten his family again. It’s a chilling shift, especially since much of the series has focused on his struggle with his half-Viltrumite heritage and his determination not to become like his father. This new ruthless side will hang over his upcoming battles against a range of both new and familiar enemies, including newcomer Matthew Rhys’s Dinosaurus, the Sequids, and the powerful Viltrum Empire, now led by the newly cast Lee Pace as Thragg.
As teased at the end of Season 3, Robert Kirkman also has an original storyline planned that takes place in Hell, bringing back Clancy Brown’s demon detective Damien Darkblood and introducing Bruce Campbell as a mysterious and powerful demon character. When the show returns, Mark will have no time to rest, facing one intense battle after another as he fights to protect the people he loves.
Invincible Season 4 premieres in March 2026. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates from NYCC throughout the weekend.
