Invasion co-creator Simon Kinberg has revealed that several of the show’s key characters were originally never meant to make it past the first season until the actors’ powerful performances changed everything.
In a recent interview with Collider, Kinberg explained that some roles evolved far beyond the writers’ initial expectations.
I’ll flip it a little bit because, I would say as an example, Enver [Gjokaj’s] character was not somebody that we conceived surviving past last season. That was true for Jamila, as well, for India [Brown]’s character, past the first season.
Kinberg said.
Sometimes, actors would show up and just be so extraordinary and take on the role and expand the role beyond any of our wildest expectations. And it sort of demanded to continue to be told, and even flipped, in the case of India, to her perspective. Billy [Barrat]’s character, Caspar, was really the protagonist of that storyline, clearly, in the first season, and she took it over in the second season, and then obviously is the only survivor from that storyline in this season.
He continued
So, there were definitely characters who would come in and surprise us and would sort of demand in the level of the acting to get more and say more, and us be able to play more in terms of nuance and dimension and the humanity of those characters.
Kinberg added,
Created by Simon Kinberg and David Weil, Invasion first premiered on Apple TV+ in 2021, offering a global perspective on an alien invasion through the eyes of different individuals across the world. The ensemble cast includes Billy Barratt as Caspar Morrow, Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuki Yamato, Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha Malik, Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans, India Brown as Jamila Huston, and Shamier Anderson as Trevante Cole.
Although Invasion received mixed reviews for its first season, the series has steadily gained momentum with critics and viewers. Despite not fully winning over audiences, it continues to maintain strong viewership and critical interest in its evolving sci-fi storytelling.
What’s Next for Invasion on Apple TV+
The third season of Invasion will conclude with its finale episode, “The End of the Line,” on October 24. Fans can expect at least one more season, as Kinberg has long envisioned the series as a four-part saga.
I’d always imagined that this was a four-season show. At the end of this season, there are some things that have some measure of closure, and there are some things that are still open.
Kinberg previously shared.
Invasion Season 3 is now streaming on Apple TV+.
