Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar is still a big hit, dominating the IMAX box office again. Due to the huge demand from fans, Paramount and IMAX increased the number of domestic IMAX screens to 320 this weekend. This move brought in $3.5 million in the U.S. and $3.75 million worldwide.
In just 10 days, the re-release has earned $10.8 million in the U.S., breaking records. The 2024 anniversary run is now the highest-earning IMAX re-release ever, making $17.4 million this year alone. Globally, the re-release has pushed the film’s lifetime IMAX earnings to $132.3 million, making it the 8th biggest IMAX release in history.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t all great news for IMAX this weekend. Sony Pictures’ Kraven the Hunter didn’t perform well, earning just $1.7 million globally in its debut. This includes $518,000 in the U.S. and $1.2 million internationally. Not the best start!
However, IMAX’s global box office still reached $8 million, thanks to several popular movies. Disney’s Moana 2 kept doing well, adding $600,000 to its worldwide IMAX earnings, which now total over $15 million. Wicked, from Universal, earned $765,000, bringing its global IMAX total to $19.4 million. Meanwhile, Warner Bros’ The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim earned $490,000 in its limited IMAX release.
