A24 is known for making great horror films by bringing fresh ideas and casting the perfect actors. In 2024, their best horror film was a low-budget, religion-inspired movie that became a box office hit. The movie, Heretic, directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, has already earned award nominations, even though it’s still playing in theaters. A big part of its success is thanks to Hugh Grant, who plays a villainous role that fans are already loving.
The movie’s long run in theaters has helped it reach a big milestone. Heretic is now officially A24’s ninth highest-grossing movie in the U.S. It has made $41 million worldwide, with $27 million coming from ticket sales in the U.S.
This means Heretic has already passed Midsommar, which used to hold the ninth spot. It just needs $100,000 more to move past Moonlight and take the eighth spot.

The movie mainly focuses on three actors, and the pressure on their performances is huge. But don’t worry, all three actors do an amazing job, with Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East giving some of their best performances ever.

However, it’s Hugh Grant who truly shines as the charming but dangerous Mr. Reed. Grant, known for his rom-com roles, brings a new twist as a villain, showing off his charismatic yet dark side. His performance has been so well-received that he’s already earned nominations for Critics’ Choice and the Golden Globes, with some even thinking he could get an Oscar nomination. Collider’s Ross Bonaime praised Grant’s performance in his review, saying:
Hugh Grant plays Mr. Reed in Heretic, bringing excitement and passion to his role. He’s been great at playing villains recently, like in Paddington 2 and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and his role in Heretic is another fantastic example. The movie lets Grant shine by focusing on him, watching him go wild as he challenges the two girls’ beliefs. He enjoys pointing out the flaws in their religion and has fun with their back-and-forth conversations about faith. Heretic really stands out when it lets Grant take the spotlight with long, powerful speeches, using funny examples like Monopoly, singing Radiohead songs, and even doing a Jar Jar Binks impression. It’s exactly what you’d want from a villainous Grant performance.
Heretic is now A24’s ninth highest-grossing movie in the domestic box office. You can buy or rent the movie on PVOD right now.
