Sony has announced that the popular PlayStation game Helldivers 2 is being turned into a movie.
The news came during Sony’s CES 2025 event, where they revealed that Sony Productions and Sony Pictures are teaming up for this project. For now, no additional information about the film has been shared. At CES, Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, said,
We’re thrilled to share what’s next. I’m excited to announce that we’re working with Sony Pictures to bring a film adaptation of our hugely popular PlayStation game Helldivers 2 to life.
Helldivers 2 has broken records as the fastest-selling game in PlayStation Studios history, with an incredible 12 million copies sold in just 12 weeks. The game’s popularity has skyrocketed thanks to the new Illuminate update, which adds a third faction for players to fight. The update focuses on teamwork and has gameplay that feels a bit like Gears of War, where working together is key.

Helldivers 2, developed by Arrowhead, draws heavy inspiration from the cult-classic sci-fi movie Starship Troopers. Set in a dystopian future, the game follows soldiers fighting to defend a totalitarian government known as the Super Earth Armed Forces. Players face off against alien robots called Automatons and insect-like creatures known as Terminids, all while promoting the satirical concept of “Managed Democracy.”

This cooperative third-person shooter cleverly critiques ideas like “enforced democracy” and “violent liberation” through its dark humor and over-the-top action.
In Helldivers 2, players step into the shoes of elite soldiers called Helldivers. Their job is to protect Super Earth and expand its control across the galaxy. Missions involve gathering resources, taking over alien planets, and battling three dangerous factions: the Bugs, the Cyborgs, and the newly added Illuminates. Players must work together and adjust their strategies based on the mission and the enemies they face.
The game is filled with dark humor, making the story both twisted and hilarious. You’ll often laugh (and maybe cringe) at the cheerful but messed-up orders your commanders give you.
