Entertainment Weekly recently revealed new details about The Last of Us Season 2 after speaking with the show’s creators. Fans can expect the upcoming episodes, airing in April, to include dark and intense scenes with content that didn’t make it into the video game.
While Season 1 covered the entire story of the 2013 game, Season 2 will only focus on part of The Last of Us Part II, released in 2020. The show, created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, is known for expanding characters and adding new ones to strengthen the story and themes.
Neil Druckmann, the writer and director of both The Last of Us games, shared that Season 2 will include material that was originally planned for Part II but cut from the game. He described the new content as “pretty brutal, but I’m very excited for people to see it.”
What’s exciting about adaptations like this is that they not only introduce TV audiences to beloved characters but also give longtime fans fresh content, offering a new perspective on the familiar story.

Despite facing backlash and online controversy due to leaks during development, The Last of Us Part II received high praise from critics and sold 4 million copies. Its success showed that many players were interested in a darker and more intense storyline than the first game offered. The game took violent gameplay to a whole new level, making players feel empathy for the characters they were fighting against and showing that violence always had consequences.

The show takes advantage of its storytelling format to explore new ideas, including the “brutal” additions Neil Druckmann mentioned. These changes help emphasize the theme of the cycle of violence in the story. Druckmann also shared with Entertainment Weekly that these updates aim to give longtime fans, who’ve followed Joel and Ellie for over 12 years, a fresh perspective on their journey through the live-action series.
I think that’s part of the fun for people familiar with the game to see how we approached that challenge in the show. I will just say that we gave it a lot of thought and tried different things. There are some deviations of where we place things.
The new content planned for the show, whether it highlights the violent actions of humans or the wild behavior of the infected, will definitely add more excitement to Joel and Ellie’s journey. These changes are sure to keep viewers coming back each week when The Last of Us Season 2 airs in April.
