Despite a challenging run at the box office, Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World is set to push Hollywood legend Harrison Ford past another cinematic icon Johnny Depp in all-time domestic box office earnings.
While the film opened strong with $87 million in its first weekend, it has experienced a significant 68% drop in ticket sales, one of the steepest declines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Only Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (69%) and The Marvels (78%) have seen worse second-weekend drop-offs. However, despite this downturn, the movie continues to dominate the February box office, bringing a notable milestone for Ford.
Harrison Ford Climbing the Box Office Ranks
Already surpassing Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in domestic box office earnings, Ford now sits just $11 million behind Johnny Depp, who currently holds the 44th spot on the all-time highest-grossing leading actors list. Given the film’s recent performance raking in $12 million domestically this past Saturday alone industry projections suggest Ford will overtake Depp’s lifetime earnings by the end of the coming weekend. The next major benchmark would be catching up to Simon Pegg, who sits $50 million ahead.
To date, Captain America: Brave New World has grossed $293 million worldwide, with $145 million coming from domestic theaters and $147 million from international markets. While it remains the highest-earning film of 2025 so far, the numbers are concerning for an MCU entry especially considering past films in the franchise have routinely crossed the $1 billion mark.

‘Captain America’ Franchise Surpasses $2.5 Billion Globally
Despite the latest installment’s struggles, the Captain America franchise as a whole has now crossed the $2.5 billion mark in global box office earnings. The biggest contributor remains 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, which pulled in $1.1 billion worldwide.
Here’s how previous films in the franchise have performed:
- Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) – $370 million
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) – $714 million
- Captain America: Civil War (2016) – $1.1 billion
Until Brave New World, every new Captain America installment had outperformed its predecessor. However, the latest film appears poised to break that streak.
With Anthony Mackie now leading the franchise as Sam Wilson/Captain America, mixed reviews and a lack of strong audience turnout suggest this entry may struggle to maintain its box office momentum.
