Renowned composer Hans Zimmer has shared why he chose to pass on scoring Marvel film soundtracks.
During a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz expressed surprise that the five-time Grammy-winning composer had never been approached by the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a soundtrack.
They have, and it was always… timing wasn’t great, And really, quite honestly, I’m looking for other things right now. Look, I’ve done the trifecta — I’ve done Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man, and Wonder Woman! I mean, what do you want me to do, some of the minor characters?
Zimmer replied
That was very arrogant of me to say that, but actually, Kevin Feige said that to me: ‘Hans, what are you complaining about?’
He continued,
Zimmer has made his mark in the superhero genre, composing scores for Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, as well as Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984. The closest he has come to working on a Marvel film was scoring Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Fox’s 2019 X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

For those wondering, Marvel isn’t the only major franchise Zimmer prefers to avoid. On the podcast, he also revealed that he would turn down the chance to score a Star Wars film, praising John Williams’ existing work as “masterful.”
I think the Star Wars thing, I think Ludwig [Göransson] is doing some very interesting things,
Zimmer said, referring to the composer behind Disney+ hits such as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka.
How many interesting things do you want to put onto this thing before it falls apart and isn’t Star Wars anymore? Because the only way I would see myself is if I could reinvent it.
