Hans Zimmer enjoys the challenge of creating thrilling music for action-packed movies, and his next project, Joseph Kosinski’s F1, is no exception. The film, set to release this summer, stars Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a former Formula 1 driver who left the sport after a major crash in the 1990s.
Years later, his old friend, played by Javier Bardem, convinces him to help a struggling racing team, APXGP, which is at the back of the pack. Hayes returns to mentor young driver Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris) and help the team compete against top real-life F1 teams like Mercedes, Red Bull, and Ferrari.

Last week, Collider hosted a special screening in Los Angeles for Hans Zimmer: Diamond in the Desert, a concert film featuring Zimmer and his band performing in Dubai. After the screening, Zimmer joined a Q&A session with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, sponsored by Rolls-Royce. When asked about his work on the film and if any of his music would be in the exciting new trailer, Zimmer confirmed that he and his longtime collaborator, Steve Mazzaro, have been busy working on it.
God, I wrote a bunch of themes. I got together with my friend Steve Mazzaro, who is an amazing genius and was in this band at one point, but really preferred the life with his wife and being at home as opposed to schlepping around the world. But Steve was very important, actually. He did a tremendous amount of really amazing work on this thing, and we are this close to finishing it.
Zimmer and Mazzaro have worked together on several films, including Top Gun: Maverick, another action-packed movie directed by Kosinski. If F1 follows the same style, viewers can expect a soundtrack that captures the speed, excitement, and spectacle of Formula 1 racing.
Since Kosinski is known for pushing the limits of filmmaking, Weintraub also asked Zimmer about the film’s advanced cinematography, which uses small, high-tech cameras to give audiences a unique view from inside the cockpit—similar to the fighter jet shots in Maverick. Zimmer didn’t reveal much but assured fans they won’t be disappointed.
Well, yes. [Laughs] On the other hand, put a gun to Steve’s head and ask him. Here’s the great thing: let us surprise you. It’s worth it
The film will be released worldwide on June 25 and will arrive in North American theaters on June 27.
