Hans Zimmer’s music for Dune: Part Two won the Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. This was a surprise win because the Oscars had ruled the music ineligible, saying it reused too much from Dune: Part One.
Even though Zimmer’s score won at the Grammys, Dune: Part Two still got five Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Sound, Production Design, Cinematography, and Visual Effects.
Zimmer, who wasn’t at the event to accept the award, now has five Grammys in total. He has won before for The Dark Knight, Crimson Tide, and The Lion King, as well as for the song Circle of Life from The Lion King.

This isn’t the first time a soundtrack that was disqualified from the Oscars won a Grammy. In 2015, Antonio Sánchez’s music for Birdman couldn’t compete at the Oscars but still won the Grammy.

The movie Challengers, starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist as tennis players caught in a love triangle, was expected to win the 2025 Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack.
Many people thought it was unfair that the music, composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, didn’t get an Oscar nomination. One expert even called it “the snub of the year.”
The Oscars and Grammys rarely pick the same winner for Best Score. This is because they have different rules about which movies can compete. The 2025 Oscars only consider movies from 2024, while the Grammys look at music from September 16, 2023, to August 30, 2024. Also, the Grammy category includes music from TV shows, not just movies.
For the 2025 Grammy, the nominees were Dune: Part Two, Challengers, American Fiction (by Laura Karpman), The Color Purple (by Kris Bowers), and Shōgun (by Nick Chuba, Atticus Ross, and Leopold Ross).
The movies nominated for Best Score at the Oscars are The Brutalist (music by Daniel Blumberg), Conclave (music by Volker Bertelmann), Emilia Pérez (music by Clément Ducol and Camille), Wicked (music by John Powell and Stephen Schwartz), and The Wild Robot (music by Kris Bowers). The winner will be announced on March 2.
