Shannen Doherty wanted to have kids before she passed away.
The star of Beverly Hills, 90210, died on Saturday, July 13, at 53. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015.
Just a few days before she died, Doherty released a new episode of her podcast, Let’s Be Clear. In a January episode with her doctor, Dr. Lawrence Piro, she shared that she had been trying very hard to get pregnant with her ex-husband before her cancer came back in 2019.
“I didn’t just want a child for myself,” Doherty said. “I wanted one for my husband too. I thought it would make our marriage stronger and make him happy.” She explained how her wish to have kids affected her decisions about treating her cancer.
Doherty explained that she and her husband, Kurt Iswarienko, married in 2011 when they were older.
“When we decided to have a baby, we needed IVF, I went through many rounds of it.”
However, Doherty had to stop IVF because of menopause and her health problems, including a mastectomy in 2016.
After her remission in 2017, Doherty’s cancer came back in 2019. By 2020, she announced she had stage 4 cancer. In 2023, she shared that the cancer had spread to her brain and bones.
Doherty and Iswarienko split up in early 2023. By November 2023, she told PEOPLE she was starting to open up to love again.
“I don’t know what love looks like now,” she said. “I have a male best friend, and we joke that we’re married. He has two kids, and we’ve gotten close. We love each other and spend time together, and I think of them as my own children.”
“I don’t know if it’s finding someone and feeling an instant connection,” she added. “But I’m open to it now, which is new. This has only been in the last three weeks.”
When it came to having kids, she said, “I go back and forth on it all the time.”
“I would love to be a mom,” she added. “I’ve always wanted that. Whether with my best friend or a partner, I think any time with a child is better than nothing. I see kids without parents and think maybe I could adopt. I’m not sure, but it’s something I think about.”
Doherty mentioned that she might be “waiting for one of those clinical trials” to help her get better.
“In the meantime, I’m spending time with my best friend’s kids and my brother Sean’s seven kids,” she continued. “They’re all grown up, but that’s okay.”
Doherty also spent time with Sarah Michelle Gellar’s kids, as Gellar shared on an episode of Let’s Be Clear in February.
“You helped my kids so much during COVID,” Gellar told Doherty. “I struggled to give them freedom and fun, and you opened your home to us. I’ll always be grateful for that.”
Doherty told PEOPLE she wanted to keep living life to the fullest.
“I’m not done with living, loving, creating, or improving things,” she said. “I’m just not done.”
Shannen Doherty’s longtime publicist, Leslie Sloane, confirmed on July 14 that the actress passed away on July 13.
“I sadly confirm that Shannen Doherty has passed away,” Sloane said. “She fought cancer for many years and was surrounded by her loved ones, including her dog, Bowie. The family requests privacy during this time to mourn.”
