She keeps hilariously waving the same bell over the outfit, repeating it.
When the characters in Game of Thrones wear dark gray robes and light gray head coverings, it immediately brings back memories of the infamous “Shame” scene. Hannah Waddingham, who played Septa Unella, famously wore this outfit while escorting Cersei through King’s Landing. Recently, she humorously pointed out that Emma D’Arcy wore the same septa outfit in Episode 3 of House of the Dragon Season 2.
To give you some background, in Episode 3 of House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra sneaked back to King’s Landing to meet Alicent. She took a risk by returning to prevent a war, disguising herself in a septa uniform. This outfit hid her long silver Targaryen hair, making her almost unrecognizable. HOTD’s Instagram highlighted this pivotal moment with a photo of Emma D’Arcy in the same costume, as shown below.
Seeing D’Arcy in this outfit reminded me of the days when Hannah Waddingham was in Game of Thrones. The Ted Lasso actress had a similar reaction and commented on the post.
“That’s my outfit! Take it off! #dingshamedingshame 😂”

I have to agree with her. That outfit belongs to her, and it’s unforgettable once you’ve seen those shocking Game of Thrones moments with her and Cersei. While the deaths in GOT are unfortunate, I think the “shame” scene is one of the most complex parts to watch in the fantasy series. And filming Waddingham’s storyline wasn’t easy either.
The actress, who won an Emmy, has said she liked that her character looked like she’d “been dug up,” and she’s been honest about how tough her Thrones scenes were to shoot. She even talked about how being “actually waterboarded” during a scene on the show gave her “chronic claustrophobia.”
Also, even though Hannah Waddingham is now more famous for Ted Lasso, her role in Game of Thrones is still remembered. In fact, that “Shame” scene has sparked many enthusiastic fan interactions over the years.

So, I liked Waddingham’s funny and passionate comment. But I also thought it was great how they used the costume in House of the Dragon. Rhaenyra sneaking into the church in the nun’s outfit to talk to Alicent was a big moment. It was a cool way to pay tribute to the original show.
This whole thing made me happy. I’m a big fan of Hannah Waddingham, and it’s always fun to hear her talk about Game of Thrones. You can watch her as Septa Unella in Seasons 5 and 6 of GOT and Emma D’Arcy in House of the Dragon on Max.
