Takashi Yamazaki, the director behind the Oscar-winning movie known for its amazing visual effects, has a new project lined up. After wowing audiences with Godzilla Minus One and its fresh take on the legendary monster, Yamazaki is teaming up with Sony Pictures for a movie called Grandgear.
According to Deadline, Yamazaki will not only direct but also write the script for this film. Interestingly, this will be his first movie where the main language is English. Details about the story are still a mystery for now.
Takashi Yamazaki received a lot of praise for his work on his last movie. Godzilla Minus One tells the story of Kōichi Shikishima (played by Ryunosuke Kamiki), who faces a heartbreaking event after encountering the giant monster.

Even though Kōichi tries to move on and live a normal life, the movie shows how he struggles to cope with the loss his community suffered because of Godzilla. Things take an even darker turn when Kōichi’s girlfriend, Noriko Ōishi (played by Minami Hamabe), is killed during one of Godzilla’s attacks. The film’s powerful focus on grief and loss deeply touched audiences everywhere, earning Godzilla Minus One recognition at the Academy Awards earlier this year.
J.J. Abrams will join Grandgear as a producer through his company, Bad Robot. Abrams has stayed mostly out of the spotlight since directing Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. While he hasn’t directed anything recently, he has kept busy as a producer, working on projects like Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes and Flowervale Street. With the release of Grandgear, fans and the film industry will get to experience more of Yamazaki’s creativity after the huge success of Godzilla Minus One.
Sony Pictures has more than just Takashi Yamazaki’s new movie on its plate. They’re also working on Kraven the Hunter, which builds on the world started by the first Venom movie. In this film, Aaron Taylor-Johnson takes on the role of Kraven.
After that, a fourth Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland will explore what happens after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. In a world full of entertainment options, Sony Pictures is finding new ways to keep audiences excited and on the edge of their seats.
