After years of rumors and failed attempts, a sequel to The Goonies might finally be happening. The original 1985 movie, directed by Richard Donner, told the story of a group of kids who find a pirate’s treasure map.
They go on an exciting adventure to uncover the treasure while staying one step ahead of a dangerous crime family. The cast included Sean Austin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan, Jeff Cohen, Martha Plimpton, and Kerri Green, who played the brave group of kids.
According to Deadline, Warner Bros. is rethinking its plans for 2025 and focusing on popular franchises alongside director-led projects. One of these is a new sequel to The Goonies. Chris Columbus, who wrote the 1985 movie, is set to create a new story for the sequel.
He had previously talked about the idea with Richard Donner, Steven Spielberg, and Lauren Schuller Donner during a reunion in 2020, where they discussed bringing the sequel to life.

Chris Columbus joining the project for a possible Goonies sequel is exciting, but it seems the movie is still in the early stages. It’s unclear what direction the story will take. Since almost 40 years have passed since the first movie, a new adventure might focus on a different group of kids—possibly the children of the original characters. This would make the movie a “legacy sequel” while bringing fans back to Astoria, Oregon, where the first story took place.

It’s hard to say which cast members might come back for a Goonies sequel. Ke Huy Quan’s career has taken off again after his award-winning role in Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022). Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, and Martha Plimpton have also stayed successful. However, Jeff Cohen quit acting and now works as an entertainment lawyer. Corey Feldman once said he would only return if Richard Donner was involved, which makes things tricky since Donner passed away in 2021.
It’s been 40 years since the search for One-Eyed Willie’s treasure, but The Goonies still inspires Hollywood today. The movie influenced the hit show Stranger Things, which even starred Sean Astin. More recently, it was mentioned as an inspiration for the Star Wars Disney+ series Skeleton Crew.

There’s no doubt fans would be excited for a Goonies sequel if Chris Columbus’s story moves past the writing stage. But based on what the cast has said before, finding the right director to reunite the gang and make fans happy won’t be easy. Past attempts have shown how tricky this can be. Still, with Columbus involved, this sequel might just have a chance to succeed, staying true to the spirit of “never say die!”
