Hiroyuki Sanada won a big award at the 2025 Golden Globes on Sunday, Jan. 5.
He was named Best Actor in a Drama TV Series. He beat tough competition, including Donald Glover (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), Jake Gyllenhaal (Presumed Innocent), Gary Oldman (Slow Horses), Eddie Redmayne (The Day of the Jackal), and Billy Bob Thornton (Landman).

He also shared some advice for young actors and creators

At 64, Sanada is the only first-time nominee in his category this year, but Shōgun received several big nominations, including Best Television Series — Drama. His co-stars, Tadanobu Asano and Anna Sawa, were also recognized. Asano got a nomination for Best Supporting Actor on TV, and Sawa earned one for Best Actress in a TV Drama.
The FX series premiered in February 2024 and received a lot of praise from critics. It had a strong awards season last year, leading the drama category at the 2024 Emmys with 25 nominations. Sanada made history by winning Best Actor in a Drama, becoming the first Japanese actor to earn this honor.

In the epic drama series based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel, veteran Sanada stars as Lord Toranaga, the ultimate strategist, whose intricate web ultimately served to unify 17th century Japan. In addition to acting, Sanada also serves as a producer on Shōgun, which was renewed for a second season after breaking ratings records for FX and Hulu. Production is slated to begin later this year.
The list of nominees was pretty diverse, with Hiroyuki Sanada being the only first-time nominee among a group of well-known Golden Globe veterans. Donald Glover, Gary Oldman, and Billy Bob Thornton have all won Golden Globes before, while Jake Gyllenhaal and Eddie Redmayne have been nominated several times.
