Godzilla Minus One is definitely one of the best movies featuring the iconic monster, and kaiju fans are excited to hear that director Takashi Yamazaki will return for a sequel.
In a recent interview translated from Japanese, Yamazaki shared that he has met with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. However, it seems the meeting didn’t lead to Yamazaki joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Marvel missed the chance, Yamazaki’s unique style could have added something special to superhero movies. But it’s unsure if he would be willing to stick to Marvel’s creative rules.
Here’s a part of the report from VG+:
When announcer Shinsuke Kasai, wearing an “Operation Kaishin” T-shirt, asked Yamazaki if the operation was popular with foreigners, Yamazaki replied, “Yes, they seem to enjoy that down-to-earth fighting style.” He then shared a surprising detail, saying, “The Marvel president even said to me, ‘Wadatsumi!’ and laughed, adding, ‘Wadatsumi, good.'”
“The president of Marvel” is thought to refer to Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, and Director Takashi Yamazaki continued, “He told me, ‘We’re all having meetings every day to see if we can make it happen like that.’ I think it’s just lip service.” He also revealed that he received a “great offer” from overseas, but turned it down in order to film a new Godzilla movie, although he couldn’t reveal the details.
It’s uncertain if Yamazaki’s next Godzilla movie will be a sequel to Minus One or a brand-new story. Fans are excited, especially since Godzilla Minus One earned $116 million worldwide with a budget of less than $10 million.
The movie became the highest-grossing Japanese film in North American box office history and won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. After a recent re-release, Godzilla Minus One earned an extra $510,000 over the weekend.

In post-war Japan, the movie presents Godzilla as a terrifying and unstoppable force. The idea is that Japan, already shattered by the war, now faces another huge threat with Godzilla, pushing the country into a “minus” state.
Godzilla Minus One is the 37th movie in the Godzilla series, Toho’s 33rd Godzilla film, and the fifth film in the franchise’s “Reiwa” era.
