Ronald D. Moore, the showrunner of God of War, has shared a new update on the upcoming Prime Video adaptation. Originally announced in 2022, the series was initially led by Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby, and Rafe Judkins. It was set to follow Kratos, the protagonist of the hit PlayStation franchise, as he embarks on a perilous journey with his estranged son after his wife’s passing. However, the project faced a setback last October when Fergus, Ostby, and Judkins exited, prompting Amazon to take a new approach.
In a recent interview with Katee Sackhoff on The Sackhoff Show podcast, Moore—who joined the project just a week after the previous team left—revealed that Amazon has already greenlit two seasons. He also mentioned that he’s actively working in the writers’ room, despite not having played the game. Check out his comment below:
Right now I’m working on the adaptation of this video game called God of War, a big title in the gaming world that Amazon has ordered two seasons of, and they have asked me to come in. I’m literally in the writers room and working on that. That’s my new thing […] And I’m not a gamer, so it’s even more like, ‘Okay, I’ve never done this before.’
When Sackhoff asks if Moore has played the game, the showrunner admits that he struggled to progress due to his lack of familiarity with modern video game controllers.

I’ve tried. I’m not a gamer, you know. I’ve taken a stab at it but I don’t have… I grew up in the arcade era […] but the controllers now […] ‘Press R1.’ And I’m like, which one is R1? Oh, I’m dead.
A creative team overhaul can often signal trouble for a TV show. In the case of God of War, behind-the-scenes disagreements about the show’s direction seemingly led to the departure of Fergus, Ostby, and Judkins. However, Amazon’s decision to greenlight two seasons before filming even begins on season 1 highlights the company’s strong confidence in the series under its new leadership.

While Moore may struggle with playing the God of War games, he is an experienced TV veteran. He has developed series like For All Mankind, Outlander, and the Battlestar Galactica reboot. Additionally, he has written over 90 episodes across Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager. Although his vision for God of War remains unclear, Amazon’s decision to greenlight two seasons may also have been influenced by the success of the Fallout TV series, which premiered last year to strong reviews and impressive viewership numbers.
Moore’s admission that he struggles to play God of War may raise concerns among fans of the games, but his decades of experience in television make a strong case for his capabilities. The fact that Amazon has already ordered two seasons is an encouraging sign, suggesting that a solid adaptation could be on the horizon.
With production progressing behind the scenes, more details about the story and cast will hopefully emerge in the coming months. Amazon is quickly establishing itself as a major platform for video game adaptations, with its anthology series Secret Level already securing a second season renewal earlier this year. While the filming timeline for God of War remains unclear, it’s evident that Prime Video will be home to plenty of video game content in the years ahead.
