George R.R. Martin, the author behind Game of Thrones, recently shared that HBO once planned a show focused on Braavos, a major city in his fantasy world. However, this project was eventually canceled. While Game of Thrones, which aired in 2011, became one of HBO’s most popular shows, the story ended in 2019, leaving fans with mixed feelings.

In 2022, a new spinoff called House of the Dragon aired, and another one, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, is on the way. Even though some new shows are in the works, others, like the Braavos idea, haven’t made it through. Martin hasn’t ruled out the possibility of revisiting the idea someday.

In a new post on his blog called The Canals of Braavos, George R.R. Martin shared that HBO once had plans for a Game of Thrones spinoff about the city of Braavos, but they canceled it a few years ago. Martin talked about his inspiration for Braavos, saying he got ideas from real-life cities like Venice in Italy and Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
He hinted that he might bring the Braavos story back someday in written form.
Even though season 8 of Game of Thrones got mixed reviews, the show was still a huge success. After it ended, several new spinoff shows were announced.

However, some of these new shows seem to have been dropped. A show about Jon Snow isn’t moving forward, and neither are planned shows about Flea Bottom, the Seven Gods, or the fall of Valyria.
Some other Game of Thrones spinoffs are still in the works, but that doesn’t guarantee they will actually happen. “In development” just means that a team is trying to create an interesting story, but it hasn’t been officially approved yet.
Spinoffs still in development or with unknown status include 10,000 Ships, Aegon’s Conquest, The Sea Snake/Nine Voyages, and The Golden Empire.

While not all the Game of Thrones spinoffs will happen, Westeros will still be a big part of entertainment for years to come with House of the Dragon season 3 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms on the way.

The Braavos spinoff won’t be one of the upcoming shows, but George R.R. Martin hinted that he might still explore this story, so fans could have a new adventure to look forward to.
Fortunately, Martin’s blog suggests that this Braavos story won’t slow down his work on Winds of Winter, the long-awaited book in the series. It’s not clear if the Braavos story would be a history-style book like Fire & Blood or a regular novel, but Martin is excited to keep expanding his Game of Thrones world in the years to come.
