The historical drama won 18 awards at the 2024 Emmys.
As they look to the future, FX boss John Landgraf shared news about the new seasons of Shōgun after its big win at the 2024 Emmys.
In an interview with Deadline, he explained that seasons 2 and 3 will have their own stories and won’t be filmed together. However, they will still be part of the same ongoing story with the same characters.
“They will have their own separate stories. We’re not sure if there will be three seasons, but looking at the characters and the history, even though it’s fictional, we think three seasons is the right amount to do it properly.”
He added

“We’re moving ahead with it. We’re getting the scripts and outlines. We’re deciding where to film it, whether we’ll use the same places and methods as before or make some changes.”
Landgraf said about season 2
Most of season 1 was filmed in Canada, and it’s not clear if season 2 will move to Japan, as hinted by star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada.
“I’ve always wanted to film in Japan. We worked hard to see if we could do it there. It’s tricky because the way things are set up in Japan is different from what we need for the show.”
Landgraf mentioned
“We’ve had trouble finding a location that matches the scale of what we want to achieve with the show. Also, the castles from medieval Japan aren’t there anymore, and even if they were, you wouldn’t be able to film there.”
He added

Based on James Clavell’s novel, the series is set in Japan in the 1600s. It shows the power struggle between Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) and the Council of Regents. The story is seen through John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), an English ship pilot who gets stuck in a village and ends up in the middle of the conflict.
