The movie Alien: Romulus divided fans at first but eventually became a cult favorite. Director Fede Álvarez has revealed that the sequel will explore completely new areas never shown in the series before. Álvarez shared that he and co-writer Rodo Sayagues are still working on the script for the Alien: Romulus sequel.
[Co-writer] Rodo [Sayagues] and I are working on that right now. We’re excited about where it can go,
he told Empire
Fans of Romulus will be thrilled, as the first movie felt like a fresh take on the franchise. As a direct follow-up to Alien, Romulus embraced the tone and style of Ridley Scott’s original film. It even included nods to the larger Alien universe, like the Alien vs. Predator games and Alien: Isolation.
Álvarez hinted that the sequel will explore even more exciting and unfamiliar territory.
We’ve covered almost everything I wanted to see in Romulus and brought back some things that fans haven’t seen in a while, Now, we can head into completely new territory.

This leaves fans with plenty to imagine, especially since Romulus was already filled with hidden details and callbacks to Alien, Aliens, Alien: Resurrection, Prometheus, and Alien: Covenant. The ending of Alien: Romulus teased Rain and Andy’s next destination, but things could easily go wrong, as is the case in every Alien movie. Álvarez shared more about Rain and Andy’s story in the sequel.
It’s exciting to take characters from this movie to a new part of the Alien world that no one has seen before and uncover things you’ve never imagined,

This confirms that Andy survives, breaking the usual pattern for synthetic characters in the series. Rain and Andy have quickly become fan favorites, rivaling iconic characters like Ellen Ripley and Bishop. Álvarez reassured fans that, while the sequel will honor past films, the focus will stay on its unique storyline.
Álvarez explained that sequels often fail because they’re made simply because they can be.
After Romulus was a success, we know we could make a sequel, But I won’t do it unless we come up with a really good idea that’s worthy of the Alien name.

He also mentioned discussing Alien: Romulus with Ridley Scott, and the theatrical version turned out much better. The Alien franchise has had its ups and downs since the first two classics, Alien and Aliens. So far, there are nine movies in the series. Recently, Scott teased that he’s working on a new Alien project, and fans can also look forward to the spinoff TV show Alien: Earth, set to premiere in 2025.
For now, you can watch Alien: Romulus on Disney+.
