Eugenio Derbez has apologized to Selena Gomez after criticizing her performance in Netflix’s musical movie Emilia Pérez. The actor admitted he was wrong after facing backlash for his comments.
During an appearance on the Spanish-language podcast Hablando de Cine, Derbez called Selena’s attempt at speaking Spanish in the film “indefensible.”
His comments drew attention because Selena is not a native Spanish speaker.
I understand where you are coming from. I’m sorry I did the best I could with the time I was given. Doesn’t take away from how much work and heart I put into this movie.
In response, Selena addressed the criticism on TikTok, saying
Selena’s thoughtful reply led Derbez to issue his own apology.
[They] go against everything I stand for. As Latinos, we should always support one another. There’s no excuse. I was wrong, and I deeply admire your career and your kind heart.
In a TikTok letter, he called his remarks “careless” and “indefensible,” writing
Derbez also said Emilia Pérez deserves to be celebrated and hoped his comments wouldn’t overshadow the film’s success. The Jacques Audiard-directed movie has already generated awards buzz, including praise for Selena’s performance.
Just last week, Selena received the Spotlight Award at the IndieWire Honors for her work in Emilia Pérez. The recognition highlights her efforts and dedication to the role.
Despite Derbez’s earlier criticism, the movie’s momentum remains strong, with fans and critics continuing to celebrate Selena’s achievements and the film’s impact.
