Elizabeth Debicki, the Emmy-nominated actress who played Princess Diana in The Crown on Netflix, believes that ending the royal drama after six seasons was the right choice.
“I think it ended at the right time,” Debicki told People. “It respected its own journey.”
Since it first aired in 2016, The Crown has won 21 Emmy Awards, including Best Drama for four seasons. This year, Season 6 has earned seven more nominations.
“It always seemed to know where it was headed,” Debicki said. “I think the writing, especially from the creator Peter Morgan, understood how the story should end. It’s a very delicate thing.”
The actress added, “He did a great job bringing such a long story to a close. I’m not a fan of the word ‘journey,’ but it was a big one for people to follow. When you watch six seasons of a show, you want it to end the right way.”
Elizabeth Debicki took over the role of Princess Diana from Emma Corrin, who played a young Diana in Season 4. Debicki’s portrayal follows Diana’s life in her final days before the tragic car crash in August 1997.

Debicki said she found the show’s final season to be very respectful. She mentioned that a lot of careful thought went into deciding how to end the series, and she felt it was handled with great care and detail.
Elizabeth Debicki is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, along with her The Crown co-star Lesley Manville. Others nominated include Christine Baranski for The Gilded Age and Greta Lee, Holland Taylor, Nicole Beharie, and Karen Pittman for The Morning Show.
