George R.R. Martin recently hinted that his popular video game Elden Ring might get a movie adaptation, especially after the buzz around its new multiplayer spinoff. Martin is best known for writing the Song of Ice and Fire books, which inspired HBO’s Game of Thrones and its current prequel, House of the Dragon, where he played a direct role.
But Game of Thrones isn’t Martin’s only work. He has written many books and short stories that got turned into movies, like the upcoming In the Lost Lands, starring Dave Bautista and Milla Jovovich. He also keeps fans updated about The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth book in his Ice and Fire series, last saying in December 2024 that it remains a priority. Still, if this new project moves forward, it might take some of his focus away.
George R.R. Martin has worked on movies, shows, and even video games, but his biggest gaming project so far is Elden Ring. He teamed up with FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki to help build the game’s world. Released in 2022, Elden Ring won several Game of the Year awards and led to the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion and a spinoff called Nightrein. Like other FromSoftware games, its future is still uncertain.

In a recent IGN Fan Fest 2025 interview, someone asked Martin about a possible Elden Ring sequel. While he didn’t confirm a new game, he did reveal that talks are happening about an Elden Ring movie. He also mentioned that his involvement would depend on his schedule.
Well, I can’t say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring. We’ll see if that [the Elden Ring movie] comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don’t know. I’m a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do.
Martin’s hint about an Elden Ring movie is exciting, especially since the last time someone mentioned an adaptation was in June 2024. Back then, FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki said he liked the idea of turning the game into a movie or show. However, he also admitted that neither he nor the studio had the skills to work outside of gaming.

If Martin’s comments are true and he works with Miyazaki to find the right partner, an Elden Ring movie could really happen. But high fantasy movies don’t get made as often because they cost a lot. Instead, shows like House of the Dragon, The Rings of Power, and The Wheel of Time have found more success on TV. Since talks seem to be in early stages, a studio might prefer turning the game into a series instead.
The biggest worry is whether Martin will stay involved. Fans still criticize the final season of Game of Thrones because it moved ahead of his books. But Elden Ring’s story is pretty vague, and Miyazaki played a bigger role in shaping the game. So, a movie without Martin might not be a problem after all.
