The best-selling video game Elden Ring is being turned into a movie, and one of the top movie studios has taken on the project. Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, Elden Ring tells a grand fantasy story, created with help from Game of Thrones writer George R. R. Martin.
A source told MovieWeb that A24 is making the Elden Ring movie. It’s not yet confirmed if Alex Garland (known for Warfare and Ex Machina) will direct it.
A rumor shared by Nexus Point News (and quickly deleted) said Garland would direct the movie. A24 is putting more effort into making movies based on video games.

They are also working on a Death Stranding film directed by Pig director Michael Sarnoski. Right now, it’s unclear who is working on the Elden Ring movie. In a 2024 interview with The Guardian, Miyazaki talked about adapting Elden Ring into other formats. He said FromSoftware couldn’t make a movie themselves. However, he mentioned he would not block the project if a “firm partner” was involved. It looks like A24 is now that trusted partner. Here’s what he said:
I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example, But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play. We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but there’s interest, for sure.
Earlier this year, George R. R. Martin hinted that talks were happening about an Elden Ring movie.
Well, I can’t say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring.
Martin told IGN. He didn’t share which studio was involved or if any director or writer had signed on yet. Martin might still have some role in the project. He continues to be involved with the Game of Thrones spin-offs on HBO, even though he often criticizes how the network handles them. However, for Elden Ring, Martin wasn’t the main writer; he only helped create the game’s world.

Elden Ring is a fantasy action game with a size and scope. Players take on the role of the Tarnished, people who lost the favor of the magical Erdtree in a place called the Lands Between. Their goal is to reclaim the Elden Ring, but they must face off against royal gods and fierce warriors who also want to rule a broken kingdom. In many ways, it’s like Game of Thrones meets The Lord of the Rings, but even bigger and more intense. The game’s story captures the grand, high-concept style that makes Elden Ring so special.
In the Lands Between ruled by Queen Marika the Eternal, the Elden Ring, the source of the Erdtree, has been shattered. Marika’s offspring, demigods all, claimed the shards of the Elden Ring known as the Great Runes, and the mad taint of their newfound strength triggered a war: The Shattering. A war that meant abandonment by the Greater Will. And now the guidance of grace will be brought to the Tarnished who were spurned by the grace of gold and exiled from the Lands Between. Ye dead who yet live, your grace long lost, follow the path to the Lands Between beyond the foggy sea to stand before the Elden Ring.
