In 2023, after years of development, Paramount Pictures released Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, a new adaptation of the role-playing game. Despite positive reviews, the film struggled at the box office.
Set in the Forgotten Realms, the movie was a standalone project with no ties to the Dungeons & Dragons trilogy from 2000 to 2012. It went through multiple studios, including Warner Bros. and Paramount, with various writers and directors since production began in 2013. While it wasn’t a major hit, the fantasy heist comedy has gained steady interest on streaming and is now back in the charts, according to Tudum.
Between March 3 and 9, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves reentered the charts, debuting at No. 10 in the U.S. While the streaming service doesn’t share viewership numbers by region, the film’s popularity was strong enough to make the rankings. Earlier, in October 2024, the movie gained international attention, landing in the global Top 10 with 3.2 million views.
The fantasy adaptation was directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Gilio, based on a story by Chris McKay and Gilio. The cast included Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant.

The film follows bard Edgin Darvis (Pine) and barbarian Holga Kilgore (Rodriguez) as they assemble a group of unlikely heroes to pull off a heist for a powerful ancient relic. However, their plan takes a turn when they cross paths with the wrong people.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves premiered at the SXSW Festival before hitting theaters later that month. It received glowing reviews, with praise for its cast, direction, visual effects, writing, and humor. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 91% critic score and a 92% audience score, earning both the Certified Fresh and Verified Hot badges.

Despite the acclaim, the film struggled at the box office. With a hefty $150 million budget, it needed around $350 million to break even but fell short. It wrapped up its theatrical run with $207.8 million (via The Numbers), barely covering production costs and losing money after factoring in marketing and distribution.
Since Honor Among Thieves resulted in a financial loss for Paramount Pictures, a sequel isn’t in the works for now. However, in July 2023, Paramount CEO Brian Robbins told Variety that a follow-up is possible but would likely have a smaller budget. In June 2024, Chris Pine expressed hope for a sequel, saying,
I think there’s a really good chance that we’ll make another one… and if they can figure out a financial way to make it work, they’ll do it,
