Director Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two secures consecutive Oscar wins. At the 97th Academy Awards, Dune: Part Two won the Oscar for Best Sound. Moments later, it also claimed the award for Best Visual Effects.
Dune: Part Two continues the story from 2021’s Dune, bringing back much of the original cast, including Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Zendaya as Chani, and Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica. The film picks up after House Harkonnen’s brutal attack on House Atreides, which also led to their takeover of Arrakis. As the story unfolds, Paul Atreides wages war against his enemies and the planet’s new rulers, setting the stage for a holy war that will shape the future of Arrakis, its people, and the entire universe.
Upon release, Dune: Part Two received widespread critical acclaim. Audiences worldwide were captivated by the film, which earned an impressive $714.4 million at the box office against a $190 million budget.

In addition to securing five Academy Award nominations, the film received major industry recognition, including seven BAFTA nominations, ten Critics Choice Award nominations, and two Golden Globe nominations. It also won a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media—an honor it was ineligible for at the Academy Awards due to its use of music from the first film.
In September 2024, Denis Villeneuve shared his thoughts on why Dune: Part Two is unlikely to get a direct sequel. He clarified,
First, it’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych, It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there, it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity.
