Hans Zimmer, the award-winning composer behind the music for both Dune films, has shared some surprising news about the next movie, Dune: Messiah.
While it was previously announced that filming would start this summer and the main cast would return, Zimmer recently hinted that things might not be moving forward as expected.
During a Q&A event, he revealed that the production timeline for Dune: Messiah might have changed, catching fans off guard given how soon filming was supposed to begin. Despite this, Zimmer is still confirmed to compose the music for the final chapter.
Dune 2 was written before Denis started shooting because we weren’t greenlit for the longest time. Have I started writing [Messiah]? No. Not quite yet. Oh, god, it’s a very complicated one, but I love working with Denis so I’m actually going to just focus on that, nothing else, and just really spend the time doing it.
Hans Zimmer won an Oscar for the music in Dune: Part One back in 2021. But when Dune: Part Two came out, he wasn’t even nominated for the sequel’s score. The reason? The Academy said the music in Part Two was too similar to Part One, so it didn’t qualify.

Director Denis Villeneuve disagreed with the decision and publicly said he couldn’t accept it. Zimmer also responded, explaining that both movies are really just two parts of the same story. So, naturally, the music was meant to flow together, not be completely different. Despite their arguments, the Academy stuck to its rules, and the Oscar for Best Score went to The Brutalist instead.

Hans Zimmer is well known for creating the music for big movies like Gladiator (with Russell Crowe and director Ridley Scott). However, he’s not doing the music for the upcoming sequel — Harry Gregson-Williams is taking over instead.
Zimmer has also worked closely with Christopher Nolan on Inception, Interstellar, and all three Batman films. Before teaming up with Denis Villeneuve for Dune, Zimmer also composed the score for Blade Runner 2049, which starred Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford. He even did the music for The Lion King’s animated and live-action versions.
Filming for Dune: Messiah is expected to start this summer. Dune: Part Two now streaming on Max.
