One of the year’s most exciting and highly anticipated music scores won’t be able to compete for an Oscar.
Warner Bros.’ movie “Dune: Part Two,” directed by Denis Villeneuve, was a big hit when it appeared in theaters in March. Critics and fans loved the film’s striking visuals, great storytelling, and especially the music by Hans Zimmer, who has won an Oscar before.
But even though Zimmer’s music for the sci-fi film was powerful and memorable, it can’t be entered for this year’s Oscars because it used too much-existing music. This means it can’t be nominated for the Best Original Score award.
Even though Hans Zimmer’s music for “Dune 2” can’t be nominated for an Oscar, it can still win other big awards like the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and even the Grammys.
Zimmer’s music for another movie, “Blitz,” a World War II drama directed by Steve McQueen, can still be considered for the Oscars. Zimmer and McQueen have worked together on movies like “Widows” and the Oscar-winning “12 Years a Slave,” so Zimmer still has a chance to win an Oscar this year.
In an upcoming interview with Variety, Hans Zimmer says he doesn’t create music just to win awards. He also talks about how he came up with the ideas and sounds for the music in “Dune 2,” giving a behind-the-scenes look at his creative process.
With this new rule, “Dune: Part Two” joins a list of great movie soundtracks that can’t be considered for an Oscar by the Academy’s Music Branch. Other examples include Jóhann Jóhannsson’s music for “Arrival” (2016), Cliff Martinez’s score for “Drive” (2011), and Clint Mansell’s music for “Black Swan” (2010).
A big surprise was when Jonny Greenwood’s music for “There Will Be Blood” (2007) and “The Master” (2012) didn’t qualify either. Interestingly, legendary composer John Williams has been nominated many times for sequels and series, like six “Star Wars” movies, two “Harry Potter” films, and four “Indiana Jones” movies.
Even though there’s been a setback, the German composer Hans Zimmer is still cheering for “Dune 2” as it competes for other awards.
Hans Zimmer has had a fantastic career that has lasted for many years, and his music has made a huge impact on movies. He has been nominated for 12 Oscars and won twice, for “The Lion King” (1994) and “Dune” (2021).
Zimmer has also won four Grammy Awards, been nominated for six Emmys, and even got a Tony nomination, making him one of the most successful and important music composers in entertainment history.
Even though Hans Zimmer’s music for “Dune: Part Two” won’t compete for the top Oscar award, his influence on movies and music is still strong. Plus, “Dune 2” is expected to be nominated for many other Oscars, just like the first movie, which was nominated in every technical category.
“Dune: Part Two” continues the exciting story of Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet) as he faces new friends and enemies in a dangerous universe. The movie also stars Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Javier Bardem, and Christopher Walken. You can now watch “Dune 2” on HBO Max.
