Doug Liman has confirmed that his next movie will be called “Deeper,” and it will star Tom Cruise. The project, originally rumoured in August, is now set to be a reality. Warner Bros is expected to produce the film, which has been in the works for about 10 years with different directors attached over time.
This project, written by Max Landis, was first announced in 2016. Over the years, many famous actors like Idris Elba, Bradley Cooper, and Gal Gadot were considered for the main role but left the project.
Two directors, Kornel Mundruczo in 2016 and Baltasar Kormakur in 2019, were also supposed to work on it, but they didn’t stay either.
Doug Liman describes “Deeper” as a supernatural thriller. The story is about a disgraced astronaut, played by Tom Cruise, who goes on a deep-sea dive to explore a newly found ocean trench. But during the dive, he encounters a mysterious and dangerous force.
Originally, MGM paid a lot of money for Max Landis’ script because it was very popular at the time. However, the studio later dropped the project after accusations surfaced that Landis had emotionally and sexually abused several women. The last time we heard from Landis, he received a co-writing credit on the 2020 movie “Shadow in the Cloud.” However, his original script for that movie was rewritten by Roseanne Liang.
Landis first became well-known as the writer of the 2012 superhero movie “Chronicle,” directed by Josh Trank. The film helped launch the careers of actors Michael B. Jordan and Dane DeHaan. Landis also wrote the scripts for “American Ultra” and “Bright.”
As for Cruise and Liman, “Deeper” will be their third movie together. They’ve previously worked on “Edge of Tomorrow” and “American Made.” They are also still working on a space movie with NASA, which is currently in development.
To sum up quickly, Tom Cruise is currently working on six upcoming projects: Iñarritu’s film, “Broadsword,” “Top Gun 3,” “Days of Thunder 2,” the NASA movie, and “Deeper.”
