The first official look at The Devil Wears Prada 2 has been released, showcasing the long-awaited return of Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway to their iconic roles. The teaser dropped online Wednesday, the same day Hathaway celebrated her 43rd birthday, and is set to Madonna’s “Vogue,” echoing the musical cues of the 2006 original film.
The footage opens with the distinctive beat of the song as a pair of studded red heels click through the Runway office. The wearer is soon revealed to be Streep’s formidable Miranda Priestly, stepping into an elevator at the magazine’s headquarters. Moments later, Hathaway’s Andy Sachs appears.
“Miranda,” Hathaway says as she enters the elevator.
“Took you long enough,” Streep replies, mirroring the tension and familiarity that defined their dynamic in the first film.
The teaser confirms the return of Streep, Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, and ends by promoting the sequel’s May 1 theatrical release, nearly 20 years after the original premiered.
Production began in New York City over the summer before moving to Europe. Lady Gaga filmed a brief role during a fashion show sequence in Milan. Despite sightings of Streep and Tucci with Vogue editor Anna Wintour in Italy, Entertainment Weekly confirmed that Wintour does not appear in the sequel.
EW also reported that Patrick Brammall replaces Adrian Grenier as Andy’s new love interest. Director David Frankel, writer Aline Brosh McKenna, and producer Wendy Finerman have all returned for the sequel, though plot details remain tightly guarded.
New cast members include Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen, Pauline Chalamet, B.J. Novak, and Conrad Ricamora.
