Death Stranding has just gotten a big update on its feature film adaptation from A24, and it’s good news for fans.
I think it’s been three, four years since we started this journey. It’s sort of taken on a new direction, with some new people that are getting involved.
In a chat with MovieWeb, Death Stranding producer Allan Ungar shared that
He also explained that even though the project has shifted direction, “The plan was always to be incredibly loyal to the universe and tell an original story set within that universe,” which is still the main goal of the studio.
The original Death Stranding video game, created and directed by Hideo Kojima (who co-wrote it with Kenji Yano and Shuyo Murata), launched in 2019 and received high praise from critics and players. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where an event called the Death Stranding unleashed invisible creatures known as Beached Things.

These beings can trigger massive explosions called Voidouts and cause Timefall rain, which quickly ages whatever it touches. The game follows Sam Bridges, played by The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus, a courier who gets caught up in a vast conspiracy.

Although the cast and story details of the movie are still secret, there have been a few major updates lately. Back in April, Michael Sarnoski was announced as the director. He previously co-wrote and directed 2024’s A Quiet Place: Day One and recently finished making A24’s The Death of Robin Hood, starring Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer, which he also wrote and directed.
Sarnoski’s version of Death Stranding is expected to explore the mysteries behind the Death Stranding event itself, which could give fans a deeper look at how the video game’s world began.
I am aiming to make Death Stranding in a way that can only be done as a film, and that will win awards at the Cannes Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival, In fact, we are also currently working on an anime adaptation.
In May, Kojima confirmed that another Death Stranding adaptation is also being made. Speaking with Vogue Japan, Kojima said about the A24 project, and added
No details have been shared yet about the anime, but it’s being developed with Line Mileage and will tell a new story written by Raised by Wolves creator Aaron Guzikowski.
For now, the Death Stranding movie does not have a release date.
