The 97th Academy Awards delivered plenty of unforgettable moments, but one that stood out was a surprise nod to Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool. As part of the show’s opening musical number, a dancer in the Merc with a Mouth’s iconic red-and-black suit made a brief but uncharacteristically silent cameo, performing on stage in a routine that left audiences buzzing.
The segment, ironically titled “I Won’t Waste Time,” was introduced by Oscars host Conan O’Brien, who led a whimsical performance featuring characters from some of the year’s biggest films. Among them was Dune: Part Two’s sandworm playing “Chopsticks” on the piano yes, really and, as O’Brien put it, “someone who wasn’t even nominated… Dancing Deadpool.”
A Nod to Deadpool & Wolverine
A clip shared by The Hollywood Reporter captures the unexpected moment, with Deadpool spinning onto the stage in a playful but brief appearance. While the dance was not as elaborately choreographed as Deadpool & Wolverine’s now-iconic opening credits scene where Wade Wilson embraced his Dancepool persona to NSYNC’s 2000 hit “Bye Bye Bye” the Oscars performance was still a fun tribute to the upcoming threequel.
Deadpool Stays in the Spotlight
Though Deadpool is typically the one stealing scenes rather than making cameos, he’s no stranger to sharing the screen. Deadpool & Wolverine is expected to feature plenty of surprise appearances from beloved Marvel characters, much like its predecessors.
One of the most buzzed-about cameos in the upcoming film is Channing Tatum as Gambit, a role he was once set to headline in a standalone X-Men spinoff before the project was scrapped following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. Now, after years of anticipation, Tatum finally makes his debut as the Ragin’ Cajun, and he hasn’t given up on the idea of a solo Gambit movie just yet.
While Deadpool & Wolverine was snubbed by the Academy this year, its presence at the Oscars proves that Wade Wilson remains the main character even when he’s just dancing in the background.
