James Gunn explained again why The Suicide Squad from 2021 isn’t part of the DC Universe’s official story. Even though the movie gets mentioned a lot in Creature Commandos, it still doesn’t count as part of the DCU.
DC Studios’ co-CEO recently explained on Bluesky why The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker Season 1 aren’t officially part of the new DC Universe (DCU), even though Creature Commandos references events from them. He said,
Short answer: Only Creature Commandos forward is pure canon. For instance, Rick Flag Jr was killed because we heard Rick Flag Sr talking about it in Creature Commandos, not because we saw it in The Suicide Squad
Long answer: Only CC forward is pure canon; Peacemaker is almost entirely consistent with that canon other than the Justice League; The Suicide Squad has a lot of consistencies but I think of it as an imperfect memory.
He added,
That makes sense, but starting completely fresh still seems like a better idea. Then again, it’s not a bad move to bring back some familiar faces from two of the few DCEU projects that got a lot of praise.
Since the holidays, Gunn has kept quiet on social media but recently gave an update on what he’s been working on. He confirmed that he’s started preparing for his next DCU movie or TV show. Remember, Gunn wrote and directed Superman, directed episodes of Peacemaker, and wrote all of Creature Commandos so far.
The bulk of my time is dealing with post-production on Superman and Peacemaker, but I’m also spending a fair amount of time pre-writing my next DC Studios project and watching dailies and offering ideas on the other projects, It’s much less overwhelming than when I was directing.
he teased

Many fans are hoping Gunn will focus on The Brave and the Bold next. This movie needs a lot of help, especially with recent questions about how The Batman fits into the DCU. Andy Muschietti’s updates haven’t done much to boost confidence in the project.
You can watch both The Suicide Squad and Creature Commandos on Max.
